Caregiving Learning Center
Helping someone move seems simple, until a knee buckles. Good technique protects your loved one from a fall and protects you from a serious back injury. Here are the basics.
You can't help anyone if you're hurt. Bend at your knees and hips, not your waist. Keep the person close to your body. Never twist while lifting, turn your feet instead. And know your limit: if it doesn't feel safe, stop and get help or equipment.
Move the chair or wheelchair close and lock the wheels. Help them stand, pivot in small steps (don't twist them), then lower slowly, letting them reach for the armrests. Clear the path first and go one small step at a time.
Look for caregivers with hands-on mobility experience, it protects your loved one and saves your back.
