Reference check call script

Calling references feels awkward, until you have the right questions. Here's exactly what to ask and what to listen for. Fill in your notes as you go, or print it and take it to the call.

Before you dial: aim for at least two references, ideally past families or employers, not friends or relatives. Warm them up first: "I'm considering [name] to care for my mother, and they gave me your name. Do you have a few minutes?"
The most important answer is the last one. A warm, immediate "absolutely" tells you a lot, and so does a pause. Pair this with a good interview and a background check.
